"Courtship in an English Countryhouse Garden"

Origin: England

Date: 1780-1790

This quintessential English courting fan is made of carved and pierced ivory sticks and a handpainted vellum (swanskin) leaf. The sticks show flowers, flaming hearts and doves. The front leaf is beautifully handpainted with a central scene of a courting couple in a countryhouse garden - she is "fishing" for a husband and he is trying to lead her astray into the garden! The reserves show a vase and the altar of Hymen including two doves and a dog, surrounded by garlands of flowers. The reverse is handpainted with a small group of fruit.

Length: 11" (28 cm) Width: 20.25" (51.5 cm)

Condition: Very good, with some losses of applied silver and gold foil on the sticks and two small light orange stains on the top edge of the leaf - nothing distracting (see photos).
