"Yellow and Grey Chinoiserie"

Origin: Italy (Sticks) and England (Leaf)

Date: ca. 1700/10 (sticks); 1720-1780 (leaf)

This fan is a marriage of fine early 18th century Italian carved ivory sticks and a mid-18th century double paper leaf (I suspect that this fan was made to match a yellow or grey silk gown, fashionable in the mid-1700s). The upper sticks show a gentleman. The front leaf is painted a light-mid grey colour, while the reverse is white  on the fan is abbreviated an/cream. The front shows a typical Chinoiserie scence  and the reverse a bird and stylised flowers.

Length: 10.5" (26.5 cm) Width: 19" (48 cm)

Condition: Perfect, with one professional period (18th century) repair on the left guardstick and a few light yellow stains in the inner ivory sticks (see photo).
