Origin: France

Date: 1920s

This fan has a typical 1920s ballon shape and was probably a dance fan. It is made of carved and painted bone sticks and a single printed paper leaf. The front of the leaf shows a handcoloured print of an 18th century original engraving showing the interior of an 18th (Georgian) century salon of a large chateau. It is a rather typical court scene showing ladies and gents playing cards and chess, reading etc. Duvelleroy is know to have reused 18th and early 19th century engraved copper plates for fan leaves in the early 20th century. It is quite likely that this is a fan made by Duvelleroy.

Length: 8.5" (21 cm)  Width: 10.5" (26.5 cm)

Condition: Excellent, with minor splits in the folds along the top edge of the leaf(see last photo).
