"At the Altar of Hymen"

Origin: France

Date: ca. 1900

Hymen is the Greek god of marriage. This beautiful fan is made of silver and gold painted carved bone sticks and a double cream/ivory coloured silk leaf. The front leaf is exquisitely handpainted in the oppulent Rococo rivival style showing an 18th century engagement scene. The reserves show buildings. The leaf is not signed. The very fine silk backing leaf shows handpainted roses.

Length: 9.5" (24.5 cm) Width: 17.5" (44 cm)

The fan comes in its original Duvelleroy (Regent Street, London) labelled cardboard box.

Condition: Excellent, but with two stains on the top left corner of the backing leaf (see last photo).Slight wear to the back of the cardboard box.
