"Cupid Riding on a Dolphin"

Origin: France

Date: 1865-1875

This large fan is made of multi-coloured mother-of-pearl sticks and a double ivory/off-white coloured satin (front) and taffeta (back) leaf with hand-made mixed Brussels bobbin and needle lace appliqués. The centre of the front leaf has a handpainted silk panel applied to it which shows Cupid and a companion riding on a dolphin (a common theme associated with marriage). The lace surrounding the painting is worked with bulrushes. The other lace shows flowers and foliage. The fan is signed "M. Rebours" on the reverse.

Length: 10.75" (27 cm) Width: 19.75" (50.5 cm)

The fan comes in its original silk moiré lined and covered wooden box. The inside of the lid bears the label of V. GIVRY, who was a shoemaker (he worked with and for, a later took over the London business of the famous French ladies shoemaker Melnotte) and retailer of luxury goods based at 23 Old Bond Street.

Condition: Very good, with a professional Victorian repair on the left guardstick (see last photo) and some discolouration on the outer folds around the painting. The blue silk moiré that covers the box is worn and faded (see photos).
