A HUGE Antique Victorian French Chantilly Lace Crinoline Dress Shawl dating to between 1850-1965
Large Chantilly lace shawls were immensely popular during the 1850s and 1860s (see the fashion plates for examples). The lace is machine-made lace worked with a floral motives (roses, carnations etc), foliage and bows. Very typical for the period. The shawl would have been worn doubled up over a crinoline dress as shown in the first photos (please note that the dress is not for sale). The shawl is difficult to photograph well due to its very large size.
The shawl measures 1.95m x 1.95m, just under 6.4ft square.
It is in very good, wearable condition with a few small flaws: a very small hole and unravelling of the binding tape on the edge (see last photos) – these can be easily repaired.
