Date: ca. 1860
This rare, unusual and very large Cantonese brise fan is made of black and gold lacquered bamboo sticks and dyed and handpainted goose feathers. The feathers are pink, purple, green and yellow in colour and arranged in pairs – very unusual indeed. The lacquered sticks show figures in garden. The guardsticks a boy or young man with a dog? The front of the feathers are handpainted with 3 figures: a man on horseback, a seated lady on a cushion and a young man/boy standing. The lady is accompanied by a seated bird (a pheasant or cockerel?). The reserves are painted with flowers.

Condition: Good condition with rubbing, wear and small losses on the feathers commensurate with its age. One stick appears to have been removed in the past and another shows a professional repair on the back. Otherwise, the sticks are in excellent condition.
