Large mid-19th century fan made of beautifully carved and pierced ivory sticks and a handmade Brussels bobbin appliqué-on-net lace leaf mounted on cream coloured silk. The lace is worked with sprays of flowers, arranged in a geometrical pattern. This fan comes in a Benjamin Lachelin box.

Date: 1860-1870

This large mid-19th century fan is made of beautifully carved and pierced ivory sticks and a handmade Brussels bobbin appliqué-on-net lace leaf mounted on cream coloured silk. The lace is worked with sprays of flowers, arranged in a geometrical pattern. The backing leaf is a champagne-coloured silk.
This fan comes in its original (but later dated) retail box labeled “”Benjamin Lachelin, Eventailliste, Paris””. Lachelin specialised in manufacture and sale of lace fans, having married into the wellknown Belgian fanmaking Goossens family. He later moved the business to Paris. This fan may have been old Goossens stock that Lachelin sold in his own box.

Condition: Very good, with minor flaws in the backing silk leaf, as per photos.
