Description

Origin: France and Belgium

Date: 1870-1875

This 19th century fan is made of mother of pearl sticks and a handmade Brussels (bobbin appliqué-on-net and point-de-gaze) lace leaf mounted on cream coloured silk moiré. The lace is worked with sprays of flowers. The backing leaf is of a cream coloured silk moiré. The silk tassel appears to be original.
This fan comes in a Mappin & Webb silk covered and pink silk lined box which is not original (it dates to the 1910s – as their Buenos Aires store did not open till 1911). The fan came to me in this box and I decided to leave it with it as it protects the fan well.

Length:9.75″ (25 cm) Width: 18.75″ (47 cm)

Condition: Very good, usable condition with minor issues on two raised folds and a few tiny age spots. The outer silk on the box shows wear.
