RESERVED Jane Austen Era Horn Brise Fan Boxed & Fan Restoration of Vernis Martin Fan

Classic Jane Austen Era brise fan made of handpainted horn sticks with applied steel circles. This fan comes in its original, green cardboard box.

Origin: France

Date: ca. 1815-1825

This classic Jane Austen Era brise fan is made of handpainted horn sticks. The horn is dyed a pale yellow colour. The natural colour of horn is greyish-beige. It was often dyed to make it stand out more against the white evening gowns. In some cases, it was dyed to resemble tortoiseshell. The is handpainted in gold with stylised flowers and foliage and has small round steel circles applied. Almost all of the circles are present (I counted three missing). The steel washers at the rivet and the ribbon are also original.
This small type of brise fan was referred to as an “imperceptible” in the early 19th century, because it could be easily concealed within a pocket or reticule.
Length: 6.25″ (16 cm) Width: 12.25″ (31 cm)

This fan comes in its original green, lidded cardboard box.

Condition: Excellent condition with minor rubbing of the paint commensurate with its great age. The box has stains on the outside, but is sturdy and has protected the fan well thus far.
