Description

Origin: France & England (painted)

Date: 1895-1900

This beautiful fan was made for the American market and retailed by Tiffany & Co. Its black handmade Chantilly lace leaf and blonde tortoiseshell sticks were made in France. The black silk insert was handpainted in England by the well-known English fan painter Francis Houghton. The very typical scene for this painter shows two young ladies in Neoclassical Dress on a garden patio awaiting a suitor who is approaching on horseback. The scene is signed on the lower right side: Houghton. The lace is worked with flowers.
This fan comes in its original silk lined box. The inside of the lid is labelled TIFFANY & Co. and MADE IN FRANCE.
Length: 9.5″ (24 cm) Width: 18.25″ (46 cm)

Condition: Good condition with some rubbing of the paint on the outer folds, paint loss and an old repair on the lace on the far right side – beside the guardstick (see photos). The box is in very good condition with minor wear on the outer silk cover.
