Rare Tauromachie Brise Fan

Rare Spanish or French brise fan made of carved and pierced boxwood and handpainted with a colourful bullfighting scene.

Origin: Spain or French (for the Spanish market)

Date: ca. 1870/1875

Brise fans showing bullfighting scenes are very rare. Usually these scenes are found on paper fans. This fan is made of beautifully carved and pierced boxwood? blades that are inlaid with steel clouté and connected via their original ribbon. The front is handpainted with a busy and colourful bullfighting scene.

Length: 8.5″ (21.5 cm) Width: 15.75″ (40 cm)

Condition: Excellent, mint condition. What looks like splits in the tips of some blades is actually the grain of the wood – the individual blades were cut from a single piece of wood (see close-up photos).
