Beautiful, large brisé fan made of highly polished tortoiseshell sticks connected via a brown silk ribbon. The upper edge of the fan shows Art Nouveau scrolls. This fan almost certainly belonged to a Baroness de Rothschild.

Date: ca. 1880-1900
This very large brisé fan, originally purchased in Vienna, belonged to a Baroness, almost certainly to a member of the French or Austrian branch of the Rothschilds, as is indicated by the crown and the double RR monogram – the C may identify the original owner as Charlotte de Rothschild (1825-1899) or Cécile de Rothschild (Anspach) (1840-1912). The fan is made of highly polished tortoiseshell sticks that are connected via a brown coloured pure silk ribbon (properly replaced). The upper edge of the fan is pierced with an attractive Art Nouveau scroll design. One side shows a handpainted crown of a Baroness and the other a double CC and RR monogram. The loop of the fan has a silk tassel and carrying ring attached.
