Date: ca. 1785
This large 18th century fan is made of carved, gilded and silvered sticks and a fine light cream coloured vellum leaf. The front of the fan is handpainted with a rather unusual geometric design containing trailing flowers, blue ribbons and butterflies that are reminiscent of Sulzer’s butterflies. All this is set against a stippled background and topped with gold coloured floral garlands. The reverse depicts small pinkish red flowers. The carrying loop is a late Victorian or Edwardian addition.
